Patterns

 What do you mean by a Pattern ?

Arrangement of objects , shapes , figures , numbers , etc. in a particular rule or order is called as a Pattern.

These arrangements are often repeated or grown in an increasing or decreasing order.

Example :

  • 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8
  • AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE  , AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE ,  AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE
  • A1 , A2 , A3 , A4 , A5 , .... A20 etc.

        






Objects with Patterns

Here are the objects we come across regularly with patterns are as follows

Dupatta                              Windows

Saree                                  Temples

Bed sheet                           Churches

Rangoli                             Bangles

etc.

What is a 'Block' in a Pattern ?

Each unit or object used to develop a pattern is called a 'Block'.

It may be a picture , a number , an object , an alphabet or group of objects also.

For example

In the above pattern the block is an arrow. This arrow has been arranged to form a pattern.

Types of patterns

Mainly patterns are of two types

  • Repeating pattern
  • Growing pattern

Repeating Pattern

A pattern where the blocks are repeated is called as a Repeating pattern

For example

  • AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE  , AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE ,  AA ,  BB ,  CC ,  DD ,  EE
  • 1 , 2 , 3 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 1 , 2 , 3
  • Rahul , Ramesh , Reeshav , Rahul , Ramesh , Reeshav

Growing Pattern

The pattern where the blocks are arranged in an increasing or decreasing order is called as a Growing Pattern.

For example :

  • 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8, .....
  • A1 , A2 , A3 , A4 , A5 , .... A20 
  • 58 , 55 , 52 , 49 , 46 , 43 , 40 , 37 , 34 , 31

Growing patterns are further categorised into two parts as per their order.

They are

  • Increasing Pattern
  • Decreasing Pattern

The pattern where the block are arranged in an increasing order is called as an increasing pattern.

For example :

A1 , A2 , A3 , A4 , A5 , .... A20 

The Pattern where the blocks are arranged in a decreasing order is called as a decreasing pattern.

For example :

58 , 55 , 52 , 49 , 46 , 43 , 40 , 37 , 34 , 31
