Difference between Fish and Whales

Q. 7 Write any four differences between fish and whales.

Fish

Whale

Fish breathe through their gills.

Whales breathe through their noses.

Fish lay eggs.

Whales give birth to babies.

Fish tail stands flat along its body.

Whale tail almost look like two legs.

Fish are cold blooded.

Whales are warm blooded.

 Fishermen in their Boats

Log boats do not go very far. If the wind is helpful, they travel about 4 km in one hour.

Q. How long will they take to go a distance of 10 km ?

Ans:

A log boat travels in 1 hour = 4 km

A log boat travels in 2 hours = 4 X 2 = 8 km

A log boat travels in half an hour = 4 ÷ 2 = 2 km

So for travelling a distance of 10 km a log boat will take 2 and a half hour.

Q. From where you are, what interesting thing do you see to your east?

Ans :

I am from Koraput. I see beautiful mountains and springs to my east.

Q. Name two things that are lying to your west.

Ans :

Two things that are lying to my west are

  • The palace of Jeypore ( King Vikram Dev )
  • The holy Shiv shrine Gupteswar

What a catch!

Motor boats travel faster , at the speed of about 20 km in one hour.

Q. How far would the motor boats go in three and a half hours ?

Ans :

Motor boats travel in 1 hour = 20 km

They will travel in half an hour = 20  ÷ 2 = 10 km

They will travel in 3 hours = 20 X 3 = 60 km

Hence the motor boats would travel in 3 and a half hours

= 60 km + 10 km = 70 km.

Q. How much time will they take to go 85 km ?

Ans :

Time taken by motor boats to travel 20 km = 1 hour

Time taken by those to travel 85 km = 85 ÷ 20

          20 │8 5 │4

                    - 8 0

------------

            5

Time taken by motor boats to travel 5 km

= quarter hour or 15 minutes

Hence the motor boats will take 4 hours and 15 minutes to travel 85 km.

Which Boat Gets How Much ?

In one trip the log boat brings about 20 kg of fish. But other types of boats bring a bigger catch as given in the table. The table also shows the speed of each type of boat, which is how far each boat goes in one hour. Look at the table and calculate –

Type of boat

Catch of fish in one trip ( in kg )

Speed of the boat  ( how far it goes in one hour )

Log boat

20

4 km per hour

Long tail boat

600

12 km per hour

Motor boat

800

20 km per hour

Machine boat

6000

22 km per hour

Q. a ) About how much fish in all will each type of boat bring in seven trips ?

Answer :

Log boat brings fish in 1 trip = 20 kg

It will bring in 7 trips = 20 X 7 = 140 kg

Long tail boat brings fish in 1 trip = 600 kg

It will bring in 7 trips = 600 X 7 = 4200 kg

Motor boat brings fish in 1 trip = 800 kg

It will bring in 7 trips = 800 X 7 = 5600 kg

Machine boat brings fish in 1 trip = 6000 kg

It will bring in 7 trips = 6000 X 7 = 42000 kg

Q. b ) About how far can a motor boat go in six hours ?

Answer :

A motor boat goes in 1 hour = 20 km

It will go in 6 hours = 20 X 6 = 120 km

Q. c ) If a long tail boat has to travel 60 km how long will it take ?

Answer :

Time taken by a long tail boat to travel 12 km = 1 hour

Time will be taken by a long tail boat to travel 60 km = 60 ÷ 12

                                                                             = 5 hours

Hence a long tail boat will take 5 hours to travel 60 km.

 The Fish Market

Many boats have brought a good catch. The fisherwomen are shouting out their prices to the buyers. The price is as follows.

Seller

Name of the fish

Price

Mini

Sardines

40 per kg

Gracy

Sword-fish

60 per kg

Floramma

Prawns

150 per kg

Karuthamma

Squid

50 per kg

Fazila

Kingfish

1200 per 8 kg

Practice Time

Q. 1 At what price per kg did Fazila sell the kingfish ?

Solution:

8 kg of kingfish was sold at price = 1200

1 kg of kingfish was sold at price = 1200 ÷ 8

8│1200│150

                     8

                   ------------

                     40

                     40

                   ------------

                          0

                          0

                   -------------

                          0

Fazila sold the kingfish at price 150 per kg

Q. 2 Floramma has sold 10 kg prawns today. How much money did she get for that ?

Solution :

Cost of 1 kg prawns = Rs 150

Therefore, the cost of 10 kg prawns = Rs 150 X 10

                                                = Rs 1500

Floramma will get back Rs 1500

Q. 3 Gracy sold 6 kg sword fish. Mini has earned as much money as Gracy. How many kg of sar4dines did Mini sell ?

Solution :

Cost of 1 kg sword fish = Rs 60

Therefore, cost of 6 kg sword fish = 60 X 6

                                                = Rs 360

Gracy earned Rs 360.

Mini earned as much money as Gracy.

So Mini earned Rs 360 by selling sardines.

Sardines fish in Rs 40 = 1 kg

Therefore, sardines fish in Rs 360 = 360 ÷ 40

40│360│9

                     360

                   ------------

                        0

                     = 9 kg

Mini sold 9 kg sardines fish .

Q. 4 Basheer has Rs 100. He spends one-fourth of the money on squid and another three-fourth on prawns.

a. How many kilograms of squid did he buy ?

Solution:

One-fourth of Rs 100 = 100 ÷ 4 = 25

As the cost of 1 kg squid = Rs 50

So he will get half kg squid with Rs 25

b. How many kilograms of prawns did he buy ?

Solution :

Three-fourth of Rs 100 = 25 X 3 = Rs 75

He bought prawns with Rs 75

1 kg prawns cost Rs 150

So he will get Half kg prawns with Rs 75

Women’s Meenkar Bank

Twenty fisherwomen have made their own bank. Each saves Rs 25 every month and puts it in the bank.

Q. How much money does the group collect each month ?

Solution :

Each woman saved money in a month = Rs 25

Therefore, 20 women saved money in a month

                                      = 25 X 20 = Rs 500

Q. How much money will be collected in ten years ?

Solution :

Money collected in 1 month = Rs 500

Money collected in 1 year ( 12 months )

                                      = 500 X 12

                                      = Rs 6000

Therefore, money will be collected in ten years

                                      = 6000 X 10

                                      = Rs 60,000

Hence 60,000 rupees will be collected in ten years.

Practice time

Gracy needs money to buy a net. Jhansi and her sister want to buy a log boat. So they take a loan from their bank. They will return it with interest.

Q. a ) Gracy took a loan of Rs 4000 to buy a net. She paid back Rs 345 every month for one year. How much money did she pay back to the Bank ?

Solution :

Gracy paid money in 1 month = Rs 345

Therefore, she paid in 1 year ( 12 months )

                                      = 345 X 12

                                      = Rs 4,140

She paid Rs 4,140 to the bank.

Q. b ) Jhansi and her sister took a loan of Rs 21,000 to buy a log boat. They paid back a total of Rs 23,520 in one year. How much did they pay back every month ?

Solution :

Jhansi and her sister paid in 1 year ( 12 months ) = Rs 23520

Therefore, they paid in 1 month = 23520 ÷ 12

12│23520│1960

                       12

                   ------------

                        115

                        108

                   ------------

                            72

                            72

                   -------------

                               0

                               0

                   ---------------

                               0

Hence they paid back 1960 rupees every month.
