Passage 1

One day, when I was going towards my boat, I was surprised to see the footprint of a man on the sand. I stood amazed! I listened; I looked around me; I could neither hear nor see anything. I went up higher to look down; I went up the shore and down the shore, but it was no good; I could find no other footprint but that one. I went to it again to see if there were any more footprints and to tell if it had been my imagination. But I was not mistaken, for there was exactly the print of a foot – toes, heel, every part of a foot. I could not imagine how it came there.

Passage 2

अनुच्छेद 1

एक था राजा I राजा जी लकदक कपड़े पहनकर यूँ तो हज़ारों रूपए खर्च करते रहते थे , पर दान के वक़्त उनकी मुट्ठी बंद हो जाती थी I

राजसभा में एक से एक नामी लोग आते रहते थे , लेकिन गरीब , दुखी , विद्वान , सज्जन इनमें से कोई भी नहीं आता था क्योंकि वहाँ पर इनका बिल्कुल सत्कार नहीं होता था I

एक बार उस देश में अकाल पड़ गया I पूर्वी सीमा के लोग भूखे – प्यासे मरने लगे I राजा के पास खबर आई I वे बोले , “यह तो भगवान की मार है , इसमें मेरा कोई हाथ नहीं है I”

अनुच्छेद 2

दो दिन बाद न जाने कहाँ से एक बूढ़ा संन्यासी राजसभा में आया I उसने राजा को आशीर्वाद देते हुए कहा , “दाता कर्ण महाराज! बड़ी दूर से आपकी प्रसिद्धि सुनकर आया हूँ I संन्यासी की इच्छा भी पूरी कर दें I”

        अपनी प्रशंसा सुनकर राजा बोला , “ज़रा पता तो चले तुम्हें क्या चाहिए ? यदि थोड़ा कम माँगो तो शायद मिल भी जाए I”

     संन्यासी ने कहा , “ मैं तो संन्यासी हूँ I मैं अधिक धन का क्या करूँगा ! मैं राजकोष से बीस दिन तक बहुत मामूली भिक्षा प्रतिदिन लेना चाहता हूँ I मेरा भिक्षा लेने का नियम इस प्रकार है , मैं पहले दिन जो लेता हूँ , दूसरे दिन उसका दुगुना , फिर तीसरे दिन उसका दुगुना , फिर चौथे दिन तीसरे दिन का दुगुना I इसी तरह से प्रतिदिन दुगुना लेता जाता हूँ I भिक्षा लेने का मेरा यही तरीका है I”

1. राजा किसी को भी दान क्यों नहीं देना चाहता था ?

उत्तर :

राजा सोचता था कि दान देने से वह दिवालिया हो जायेगा I उसका राजकोष खाली हो जाएगा I इसलिए वह दान देना नहीं चाहता था I

2. राजदरबार के लोग मन ही मन राजा को बुरा कहते थे लेकिन वे राजा को विरोध क्यों नहीं कर पाते थे ?

उत्तर :

राजदरबार के लोग जानते थे कि राजा क्रोध में आकर दंड दे सकता था I इसलिए दंड से बचने के लिए वे विरोध नहीं करते थे I
